What's involved in hosting a website?

A web hosting service is a type of Internet hosting service that allows individuals and organizations to provide their own websites accessible via the World Wide Web.

Disk Space and Bandwidth

Disk space is used to describe the amount of data that has been allocated to a website. Every page in a website needs to reside somewhere. A website whose size - determined by the total sum of the sizes of each page on that site - exceeds the disk space that has been allocated to it, it would be necessary to look at ways to fix it. The best option would be to upgrade to a higher graded hosting package. Other options include looking at better methods of web design, including Cascading Style Sheets.

Bandwidth is used to describe the amount of data that can be transferred to or from a website or server, measured in bytes transferred over a prescribed period of time. This can be more accurately described as "Monthly Data Transfer." If visitors to a website download a total greater than their bandwidth quota, the bandwidth limit will have been exceeded.

E-mail

E-mail(short for electronic mail; often also abbreviated as email or simply mail) is a store and forward method of composing, sending, storing and receiving messages over electronic communication systems. teclan's hosting packages come with an allocated number of mailboxes, determined by the hosting package. Our e-mail service includes the following features:

  • Remote web access - access your email from anywhere.
  • E-mail forwarding - set up e-mail addresses that forward messages on to other mailboxes.
  • Mail aliases - typos in e-mail addresses can be resolved to forward to the correct mailbox.
  • Auto-responder setup - compose a message to send to your contacts when they try to contact you when you are not in the office.

Security

Secure Sockets Layer, SSL, is the standard security technology for creating an encrypted link between a web server and a browser. This link ensures that all data passed between the web server and browser remain private and integral. SSL is an industry standard and is used by millions of websites in the protection of their online transactions with their customers. In order to be able to generate an SSL link, a web server requires an SSL Certificate.

The majority of consumers now expect security to be integrated into any online service they use. As a result they expect any details they provide via the Internet to remain confidential and integral. For many customers, the only time they will ever consider buying your products or services online is when they are satisfied their details are secure.

Dynamic Content

Classical hypertext navigation occurs among "static" documents, and, for web users, this experience is reproduced using static web pages. However, web navigation can also provide an interactive experience that is termed "dynamic". Content (text, images, form fields, etc.) on a web page can change, in response to different contexts or conditions.

  • Perl has been used since the early days of the Web to write CGI scripts. Ecommerce solutions, such as Actinic, use this programming technique.
  • PHP is a reflective programming language originally designed for producing dynamic web pages and used mainly in server-side scripting. It is commonly used to work with MySQL databases.
  • MySQL, in its basic form, runs as a server providing multiuser access to a number of databases.
  • Server Side Includes (SSI) is an easy server-side scripting language used almost exclusively for the web. As its name implies, its primary use is including the contents of a file into another, via a web server.
